14 July 2008 — Vive la France!

The painting shown above, Rue Montorgueil, Paris, 30 June 1878, by Claude Monet, depicts a feast set in Paris on that date to honor the Republic. The following year, the feast was was held on 14 July and included a military review, a reception in the Chambre des Députés and a Republican Feast in the Pré Catalan. In 1880, it was proposed that there be a yearly national holiday celebrated on 14 July, and so it has been ever since.

I assume that the above painting, which is lovely, is still at the Musée d’Orsay [that converted "railway station" you wrote about below]?
anniemousette,
It is lovely, isn’t it? And you are right, it is in the Musée d’Orsay.
Its a great painting for it has such movement. I really feel like the flags are flying around and the people cheering!
I agree with you, ladyjicky, and it has long been one of my favorites.
